What
to expect from your first class...
Welcome! We are so happy that you’ve
decided to start… and we guarantee
that a regular Bikram Yoga practice will change your life in the most
wonderful ways.
If you’re feeling nervous, scared or even
a little intimidated… that’s no problem... many people
feel that way initially. Just don’t let it stop you from coming
to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners…
just know that with a little practice and experience, you’ll
feel right at home.
Bikram Yoga is for everyone… Bikram
say’s “it’s never too late, you’re never too
bad, you’re never too old, and you’re never too sick to
start again from scratch and do this yoga”. Come to class, and
with the guidance of your teacher just try your best …you will
get 100% of the benefits of the yoga.
And don’t think you have to get in shape
before coming to your first class… just take your first class…
then make a commitment to yourself to come as often as possible…
you’ll lose weight if needed, get in great shape, and feel terrific.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day…
so that you’re well hydrated before coming to class. Good hydration
supports the healthy function of your body’s systems and makes
the heat feel comfortable rather than overwhelming.
Arrive 15 – 20 minutes early for your first class.
This gives us time for registration and orientation. Arriving early
ensures a stress free and relaxed beginning to your lifelong Bikram
Yoga practice.
Dress in cool comfortable clothes…
something you would wear to the beach on a hot summer day… no
longsleeved shirts or pants please.
You will feel challenged by the yoga during class… everyone
does! Just work to your edge, but listen to your body and its wisdom.
As a beginner, stop when you need… and don’t be afraid
to sit down. It’s normal, especially when you start, to feel
a little uncomfortable, dizzy, lightheaded, maybe nauseous…
it’s only temporary. As your body acclimates to the yoga these
sensations will disappear and you will be on your way to a healthier
life.
Nobody is going to look at you or judge you during class. The teacher
will guide you and instruct you with respect. There will be no need
to be self conscious. The students will all be focusing on themselves…
they’ll be working too hard to even notice you.
Take
your second class within 24 hours. If you do, the second
class will have the equivalent effect of 3 or even 4 classes…
and, you will bypass much of the soreness you would experience otherwise.
Then make up your mind to take 10 classes as quickly as possible…
after that, no one will have to tell you how good this yoga is and
your own personal experience will then be your guide for life.
If you have a yoga mat, bring it, along with a large bath towel and
drinking water. We have these items available at the school on loan
for your first visit, and then for rent thereafter.
Remember that everyone had their first Bikram Yoga class… even
the students who make it look so easy and have been coming for years…
they make it look easy because they perservered… You can too!
